First weekend as a teacher
Alex @ June 15, 2007 | | Education |
Wow. I never thought weekends would be so welcome. For some reason, I’m terribly bushed.
I guess having to deal with shy and a few smart-mouthed (handed?) freshmen can take its toll on you mentally. One of the reasons why I never opted to teach in the high school level (especially in the Ateneo) is that I don’t want to deal with Smart Alec kids full of angst (oh, it’s “emo” nga pala). I now realize what a pain in the ass, I was as a know-it-all kid back in the day (I still am, but at least I’m the one sitting at the teacher’s desk.
I’m not saying that my mostly-freshmen classes are filled with these types, I just can sense that still have that tail end of the high school vibe in them. A couple or so weeks of a UP atmosphere ought to start battle-hardening these kids. Let’s wait until they start feeling the Math 17 strain (*winks at Tina*). In any case, everything is going fine so far.
I’m really loving my English 30 class (not that I don’t love my other classes less). Maybe it’s because I have an older student base in that class and we can discuss things that are more relevant to our lives. Plus I have plenty of stuff to share with them since it’s pretty much work and career related LifeSpy posts delivered in a classroom setting. Working the corporate route sure gave a me a lot of perspective and experiences to share.
My body is still adjusting though. I still feel sleepy in the afternoons and the daily commute is quite a punishment. I found myself taking a nap in my room (which I share with Prof. Robby Laurel) just before my afternoon class. Maybe the only consolation is having an office at FC (wee, aircon!) and at least I can plug my laptop in and start blogging or writing. Thank goodness for Google Gears too. For some reason, I still need to sort out the Dilnet connection in our room with the tech people to get an active connection.
I had a bad case of migraine and the sniffles last night and still had to go to UP this morning to sort out my reduced fees for enrollment. And it’s even called a privilege when just the process of going Amazing Race across four buildings just cancels out what should be a perk of the job. Oh well, I guess I really had to be crazy to take up that teaching offer.

this sounds like a payback time, lol
Yeah. But at least I know how to be a smart-ass and still be in the teacher’s good graces enough to get me an A+ grade.
In any case, we’ll see with the kids.
Agree with dimaks, that’s my favorite line too haha looks like they better watch out
It’s just the first week, you’ll eventually be able adjust
plus, just think of it (you going through buildings to buildings as free exercise, atleast you need not go the gym that often hehe
I guess it’s good that you kept this blog relatively PG just in case one of your impressionable students happen to surf through. hehe
Yes. That’s why I curbed tongue (pen?) and never again did I post hardcore snark retort. It would be “improper” of me. *barfs*
Where do you teach? Manila? Detention that will stop some of the smart arses!
Hi Miles. I teach in Diliman. Yeah, but detention’s not a feasible thing for college students. Hehe.
Paperwork in UP = Amazing Race forever.
Hahaha. I remember when I was fixing my shifting papers. Eep. I had to run to and from CS to OUR to PNB to Stat to Vinzons etc etc
Yeah. Even having the combination of Ikot and Toki jeeps don’t help at all. They even slow you down. Makes me think UP is only really to kids with cars.
yes, Alex, just think of the trees in UP–you can’t find them anymore in many other places outside UP. everytime i pass by UP, i am simply amazed, i would even like to walk!
