Avenue Q is not Quezon Avenue

Avenue Q TicketsOne of the trade offs of working everyday and studying on the side is you miss out on a bit of culture. I’d have to admit that I haven’t listened to the radio in a long time (both AM and FM) so I know diddly-squat about who’s who in music industry. Sure I watch movies but hey, Incredible Hulk doesn’t really count for anything other than geek and pop culture.

So how about a bit of Broadway. Yup, risking another huge sum of money, me and Team Sugoi decided to pump some culture in our lives by watching the farewell run of Avenue Q in Makati last Friday. Uhm, so yeah, culture might be arguable since Avenue Q isn’t Les Miserables or Miss Saigon or even Cats for that matter. But hey, I’m going to take (and took) what’s there.

And oh boy, did I have a good time.

Brains… Bolinao… Brainless

Alex @ June 11, 2008 | | Life, Lifestyle, Personal, Photos | Comments (6)

My friends are a bunch of smart people. You can mess with the permutations but to sum it up, we have four cum laude, two magna cum laude, and one summa cum laude graduates (of UP Diliman at that). We have a math professor, two discourse analysts, a software engineer, an EC engineer, a web developer, an award-winning digital artist, a painter, two law students (soon to earn their LLBs), a med student (soon to be an MD), two published writers, a systems analyst, a project coordinator, and two people who can speak Nihonggo fluently. An impressive roster, indeed.

However, we, as a barkada, have one basic flaw. We tend to be brainless when together. Give us a spot where we can congregate, whether it’s over iced coffee or bottles of beer, and every hint of intellect would then slowly fade into obscurity. Then out come the evil monsters spawned by repressing lifestyles and demented childhoods. Next thing you know, you’d think that you’re not seeing what’s supposed to be a bunch of decent young professionals who have respectable careers. Pretty much like how Bruce Banner turns into the Hulk, only with less physical mutation but pretty much the same level of insanity.

So is the tale of our trip to Bolinao.

You got to hate neighbors

Alex @ January 28, 2008 | | Lifestyle, Personal, Politics and Society | Comments (1)

I’ve lived in our house for all my life. Over those 24 years, we’ve had neighbors come and go. Most of the old neighbors were good. But now, I feel like I live in the pits. I hate our neighbors. I so swear, just as soon as I can make payments for an apartment or even a small house, I will just to get our of this blasted neighborhood. Don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t all too bad back then. Back when most of our neighbors were family friends. But things have changed over the years.

Buhay America

Alex @ January 20, 2008 | | Lifestyle, Politics and Society | Comments (2)

Found this being forwarded as spam. But reading it, it’s not really spam-ish at all.

Pag wala kang credit card, ibig sabihin wala kang kapasidad magbayad.

Proud to be pango?

Alex @ March 17, 2007 | | Lifestyle, Politics and Society | Comments (0)

Back in my earlier years in college, I had this white guy for a professor in my freshman English class. One thing he shared with us is his puzzlement on the Filipino’s need for all sorts of beauty products ranging from whitening creams and nose jobs (Yeah, like white people don’t undergo nose jobs, just look at these rhinoplasty pictures).

Anyway, it’s the tisoy complex to which everyone seems to adhere. Can’t blame our society. Over four centuries of colonial rule under white people does that to you. Hence we have them all - skin whitening, nose jobs, Cherifer…

I’ve nothing against these procedures though. I think one has the right to do what they want with their bodies and if they’re pango and unproud, they could get their noses done as long as they don’t have to steal for it. If that’s a way to help them feel more comfortable and confident so be it. I just think that that people who consider pango and sarat as ugly very colonial. That’s the physical make up of Austronesians. What are we to do?

Anyway, I don’t want to write much on the aesthetics on colonialism. Just thought I’d squeeze in the topic of nose jobs. Now I wonder if Pacquiao undergoes rhinoplasty everytime.
